Change UZH Email Address

Introduction

Your UZH email address is automatically generated from your official personal details. This page explains how the address is formed and how you can update it if your name changes.

Students

How Is Your UZH E-Mail Address Generated?

The first and last names you provide in the application portal are verified by the Registrar’s Office or the Admissions Office. This ensures that all student documents (e.g. UZH Card, certificate of enrollment, transcript of records, graduation documents) match the details on your official ID.

Afterwards, an Identity Management account (IdM) is automatically created in the student administration system. This includes:

  • UZH full name (e.g. Petra Maria Mustermann)
  • Short name (e.g. pmuste)
  • Email address (e.g. petramaria.mustermann@uzh.ch)

If there are duplicate names, the email address is numbered sequentially (e.g. peter.mueller3@uzh.ch).

How Can You Change Your Email Address?

A new UZH email address can only be created if your name changes during your studies

Here’s what to do:

  1. Submit a request for a name change via the Student Portal and upload a valid official identification document.
  2. Once approved, you will receive an email asking you to confirm the change in Identity Manager.
  3. The new email address will only be created automatically once you have confirmed this.

Notes:

  • You will continue to receive notifications at your current address.
  • If you decline the change in Identity Manager, your old email address will remain unchanged.
  • A name change will also affect all student documents (e.g. certificates of enrolment and degree certificates).

How Can You Change Your Personal UZH Email Address?

Your @uzh.ch address is automatically generated based on the personal details from your employment contract. If there are people with the same name, the address is numbered sequentially (e.g. peter.mueller3@uzh.ch).

  1. Report a name change (e.g. due to marriage) to your HR manager in your unit (institute/clinic/seminar/department).
  2. Submit an official identification document (passport or ID) as proof.
  3. After the change has been recorded, you will receive an email with further steps for confirmation.

The @uzh.ch address will then be updated automatically. If you wish to change your address, this is always done via a name change.
